… Sue against quackery in the Health Sector.

The Chairman, House Committee on Health, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Hon Udeme Otong, on Tuesday, July 27th, during the House plenary, sponsored a Bill to establish Akwa Ibom State Maternal And Prenatal Death Surveillance And Response Agency. He also motions to stem the tide of quackery in health sector, calling on the State Government to rekindle the Covid-19 safety protocols and sensitize the people to aid in fighting the deadly Covid-19 Delta variant.
Presenting the Bill and motion, the assemblyman emphasized that the bill when passed into law will improve the maternal and newborn health, help in numbering, identifying and reporting all maternal and prenatal deaths, determine causes of death, review all maternal and prenatal deaths etc.
On the two Motions on Matters of Urgent Public Importance, Hon Otong, stressed that the motion will stem the tide of quackery in Akwa Ibom State health sector and also call on the State Government to rekindle Covid-19 safety protocols to prevent the deadly Covid-19 Delta variant and also sensitize the people about the disease.
Highlighting the importance of the motions, the lawmaker maintained that the continuous rise of unprofessionalism in the Health sector, has caused untimely death to many promising individuals who would have contributed to Nation building through their intellects.
He maintained that reports and evidences emanating from the public have clearly proved that significant proliferation of unaccredited Health Training Institutions across the State where graduates from these HTIs who are half-baked due to lack of facilities and manpower for such trainings are the causes of unprofessionalism in the sector.
Otong who represents Abak state constituency in the state house of Assembly, expressed displeasure over these unprofessional practices by quack health personnels and called on the State Government to set up monitoring assessment committee, to regularly visit all those affected with a view of assessing their standards and stability for operation in the State to curb quackery.
He further highlighted the importance of the motion to rekindle Covid-19 safety protocols, maintaining that it will compliment the State Government effort in the fight against the deadly Delta variant and will as matter of urgency enforce the Covid-19 Protocols which include; regular washing of hands, the use of hand sanitizers, compulsory use of nose mask, provision of water dispensers in churches, markets, public places and to observe social distancing.
Commending the sponsor of the motions, the Speaker and Honourable Members of the seventh Assembly, described the motions as timely, people oriented and directed the Clerk of the House to communicate the House resolutions to appropriate quarters.
