Apple Music is delving deeply into the growth of Amapiano and the female leaders of the genre that is taking the world by storm.
The bass-heavy, jazz-punctuated dance sub-genre known as Amapiano, which means “pianos” in Afrikaans, has been seen as a symbol of South African street and youth culture since the late 2010s.
Under the typically male-dominated domain of dance music, the genre has also given women a place to flourish and shaped the sounds and styles of their burgeoning careers.
These musicians include DJ and producer Uncle Waffles, a native of Eswatini, singer-songwriter Nkosazana Daughter, a native of Kwa-Zulu Natal, and DJ and producer DBN Gogo.
These are the musicians who wrote some of the most well-known songs in the genre and introduced Amapiano to the rest of the world.
Uncle Waffles, who is one of the women being honored, says she is thrilled to have the opportunity to travel the country and introduce the world to Amapiano.
According to Nkosazana Daughter, she wants to use Amapiano to treat individuals who listen to her music as a calming salve that promotes healing.
DBN Gogo wishes for more people outside of South Africa to dance and appreciate the music because she is appreciative of the opportunity to promote her nation on a worldwide scale through Amapiano.
