Tobi Amusan, a Nigerian athlete, was reportedly cleared of doping and given the go-ahead to defend her title at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, the following week. However, the World Athletics has refuted the accusations.
This clarification was provided by Nicole Jeffery, Head of Communications for World Athletics, in an email to media who have been approved to cover the 19th Championships, which get underway this weekend
“Please be advised – reports appearing in Nigeria that say Tobi Amusan has been cleared to compete in Budapest are wrong.
“No decision has been made in this case yet. When a decision is made, it will be announced by the Athletics Integrity Unit,” wrote Jeffery in the message
Remember that the Athletics Federation of Nigeria barred Tobi’s name from competing in the future event scheduled to take place from August 19 to August 27, 2023, as a result of the doping probe.
The AIU has stated that a choice will be taken on the subject prior to the start of the World Championships.
In July, Amusan was charged with an anti-doping rules violation for missing three drug tests in the span of 12 months.
With the Athletics Integrity Unit to hold a hearing on her case before the World Championships, Amusan has vowed to fight the charges and prove her innocence.
