The ‘All Farmers Association of Nigeria’ (AFAN) has expressed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s establishment of the Livestock Development Ministry will bring happiness to its members across the country.
Femi Oke, the South West Chairman of AFAN, shared this sentiment in an interview with Channels Television on Wednesday. His statement followed President Tinubu’s announcement of the new ministry on Tuesday.
Oke explained that the creation of the ministry was based on recommendations from agriculture stakeholders to the federal government. He noted that the Livestock Ministry is expected to resolve the long-standing conflicts between farmers and herders, as well as address banditry in Nigeria.
“This decision is not surprising to those in the agriculture sector. We previously held a meeting in Abuja focused on livestock, where we concluded that the federal government should take this step. The aim is to reduce the challenges within the Ministry of Agriculture. For years, we have been dealing with farmer-herder conflicts, and we decided that decentralizing the agriculture ministry would be beneficial”
“It is a welcome development to we farmers. It is a joy to farmers.
“We believe the ministry’s creation will bring to an end farmers-herders conflicts and banditry,” Oke said.
Similarly, Ayuba Rano, the National Secretary of the Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers in a Channel TV interview on Wednesday said the development will bring a solution to food insecurity in Nigeria.
“The president has given full attention to livestock development, which is a major challenge to food security.
Fulani socio-cultural group, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, has been at the forefront in championing the call for the creation of a Livestock Ministry.
On the other hand, some Nigerians have kicked against the ministry establishment, stating that it would further increase the cost of governance as the development further increased ministries under Tinubu government from 49 to 50.
