The National Association of Nigerian Traditional Medicine Practitioners (NANTMP) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to swiftly pass the National Traditional Medicine Bill, which they believe will enhance national well-being and economic growth. The call was made by Dr. Soyoye Samson, the southwest NANTMP vice president, during the inauguration of the association’s new executive members in Oyo State on July 25.

Dr. Soyoye emphasized that the bill aims to professionalize traditional medicine and promote the development of herbal practices. He also urged President Tinubu to promptly assent to the bill and ensure its effective implementation. Highlighting examples from China and India, he noted that these countries have long benefited from traditional medicine laws.

The NANTMP is collaborating with international embassies from China, India, and Switzerland on exchange programs related to traditional medicine. Dr. Soyoye announced plans to establish a National Secretariat in Abuja and to advocate for the creation of traditional medicine boards in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He also noted efforts to eliminate quackery and establish departments of traditional African medicine in selected universities.

National Secretary Dr. Kamaldeen Adeagbo emphasized the need for focus and discipline among the new executives. He urged them to prioritize serving lives and eradicating non-professionals within the association. Adeagbo highlighted the importance of traditional medicine as a cultural heritage and called for collective efforts to ensure the National Traditional Medicine Bill’s passage and implementation. He also mentioned ongoing collaborations with the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Raw Material Research Council to advance traditional medicine in Nigeria.
