The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has issued a directive for medical personnel to report any individuals with gunshot wounds to the police. This follows an incident where hoodlums exploited ongoing protests to engage in violent criminal activities, including robbery and assault, leading to a confrontation with police in the Lugbe area of Abuja.
In a statement by police spokesperson Josephine Adeh, it was noted that the command had received reports of the hoodlums’ actions, which included blocking the Shehu Musa Yaradua Expressway and attacking residents. The police engaged in a gunfight with the hoodlums, many of whom reportedly fled with gunshot injuries.
Adeh emphasized that under the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act 2017, medical facilities must provide urgent care to gunshot victims and inform the police about such cases. This is crucial for assessing the individuals’ involvement in the security situation.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh, cautioned against using protests as a cover for committing crimes. He assured the public that the police are prepared to maintain order and protect citizens’ rights and property during the protests.
