Afe Babalola Criticizes Tinubu Govt’s Palliative Measures, Calls for Constitutional Reform

Newsie Events:

Renowned legal expert Afe Babalola has criticized the Federal Government for turning Nigerians into beggars and driving citizens into poverty.

He expressed these concerns in response to the recent distribution of palliatives aimed at alleviating the impact of the current economic challenges.

Speaking at a public event on Thursday, August 16, Babalola stated, “Those who are complaining about hunger are sincere. They are genuinely hungry, and a hungry person will go to great lengths to express their frustration. We don’t need anyone to tell us that there’s hunger in the country—the protests are real, and the government should heed them.”

He emphasized that the government’s primary responsibility is the welfare of its citizens.
However, he noted that people are now afraid to move freely, have abandoned their farms due to insecurity, and are at risk of being killed if they do venture out.

According to Babalola, this failure of the government is the root cause of the widespread hunger.

Babalola also criticized the government’s approach of distributing basic food items like garri, beans, and rice as palliatives, arguing that this practice is reducing people to beggars and promoting poverty.

He urged the government to instead focus on creating an environment where people can work and sustain themselves.

Regarding the ongoing calls for constitutional reform, Babalola expressed his support for the initiative but opposed the idea of a constitutional conference.

He cited the recent example of President Bola Tinubu’s proposal to revert to the old National Anthem, which was implemented without a conference.

Babalola argued that the parliament should similarly bring back and reenact the 1963 constitution, which was created by the people.
