Akwa Ibom State Chief Judge, Justice Ekaete Fabian Obot, recently visited correctional facilities in the state, leading to the release of 44 inmates. The released individuals included two females and 42 males, many of whom were held for minor offenses such as petty theft and assault. The decision followed a thorough review of case files and considerations of the length of detention and individual circumstances, including health issues and lack of prosecution.
Inmates were freed from facilities in Ikot Abasi, Eket, Ikot Ekpene, and Uyo. Justice Obot emphasized that the release aimed to address the overpopulation of facilities without compromising public safety. She also called for improvements in the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates, including educational opportunities and better logistical support for the facilities.
State Controller of Corrections, Julius Ezegwu, acknowledged the Chief Judge’s efforts and highlighted ongoing challenges, such as outdated infrastructure and insufficient transportation for court appearances.
