The Anyigba-Dekina-Shintaku Road in Kogi State, which has faced significant delays, remains a point of contention for local residents and authorities. Originally constructed in the 1960s, the road’s condition has worsened over the years, exacerbating its reputation as a hotspot for criminal activities due to its poor state.
The rehabilitation project, initially launched in 2017 by then-Governor Yahaya Bello, faced issues from the start. Despite the deployment of 21 earth-moving machines, only two remained, and concerns about the credibility of the Kano-based company awarded the contract surfaced. The project was re-awarded to TEC Engineering Company in February 2022, with a completion deadline set for February 2024. However, progress has been minimal, with equipment being moved off-site shortly after deployment.
Local leaders, including Hon. Shuaib Imam and HRM Alh. Yahaya Lerama, have expressed frustration over the road’s condition and the lack of government intervention. Motorists and residents are experiencing significant difficulties, with increased costs and longer travel times due to the road’s poor condition.
Federal Controller of Works in Kogi State, Engr. Olayinka Onogoye, has cited several factors contributing to the delay, including the kidnapping of an expatriate involved in the project, the rainy season, and issues with approved designs. He assured that work would resume after the rainy season.
Attempts to get a response from TEC Engineering regarding the project’s status were unsuccessful.
