The Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed strong condemnation of the alleged abduction of journalist Seun Odunlami by police operatives. According to reports, Odunlami was forcibly taken while leaving Providus Bank near the union’s secretariat in Abeokuta. Eyewitnesses described the incident as alarming, with plain-clothed officers using unmarked vehicles.
The NUJ’s statement, signed by Secretary Bunmi Adigun, characterized the act as shocking and unlawful, likening it to Gestapo tactics. They emphasized the need for the immediate release of Odunlami, a detailed explanation of his abduction, and an investigation into the police’s actions. The council highlighted that this incident threatens the fundamental rights of journalists in Nigeria and called for urgent intervention from relevant authorities to ensure Odunlami’s safe return.
The NUJ expressed solidarity with Odunlami’s family and colleagues, who are deeply concerned for his well-being.
