Nigerian workers have confirmed that they are receiving the Federal Government’s new minimum wage of N70,000. This announcement was made by Benson Upah, spokesperson for the Nigeria Labour Congress, and Tommy Etim, Deputy President of the Trade Union Congress.
They encouraged other employers to follow the government’s lead in implementing the wage increase. A civil servant also confirmed receiving the new payment for September, along with an additional N40,000 for consequential adjustments.
This wage increase affects over 1.2 million federal workers and follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval in July 2024, which represented a 100% increase from the previous N30,000 minimum wage. The implementation comes amid rising inflation rates, with headline inflation at 32.15% and food inflation at 37.52% as of August 2024.
