Hardship in FCT: residents call for urgent Govt action

Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are voicing their frustrations over skyrocketing transport fares and fuel scarcity, which are severely limiting their mobility and economic activities.

In interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria, many expressed that the high cost of transportation is exacerbating their daily struggles. Fuel is becoming increasingly difficult to find, leading to higher transportation costs that affect both personal and business engagements.

Mrs. Rebecca Solomon, a civil servant, urged the government to fulfill its promise of introducing Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses. She noted that these buses could alleviate the transportation burden on residents, who are increasingly desperate for relief.

“We need God’s intervention because the situation is worsening,” Solomon lamented, emphasizing the dire state of many families.

Nurse Godson Edache highlighted the ripple effects of rising transport fares, stating that the costs are impacting his budget and decreasing patient visits at his clinic. “Transportation is crucial; it affects everything,” he remarked, reflecting on the challenges of affording daily commutes.

Mr. Gabriel Ojo, a desk officer, expressed frustration over the fuel situation, suggesting that fuel stations may be hoarding supplies to drive up prices. He has resorted to using cabs rather than his own vehicle, illustrating the extent of the financial strain.

For Agnes Goja, a student, the situation is equally grim. Her aunt, a petty trader, can no longer afford to give her transport money, forcing Goja to trek to school. She shared, “My aunt is barely managing to feed us.”

Trader Miss Abiba Sule detailed how her mobile business has suffered due to high transport costs and reduced customer spending. “I can’t afford to rent a shop, and now I can’t even sell as I used to,” she said, noting that two of her children are out of school due to unpaid fees.

Mr. Festis Azubuike, a teacher, acknowledged the resilience of Nigerians despite the hardships. “We are brave and creative,” he said, but emphasized the need for effective policies from the government to address these pressing issues.

As residents continue to struggle with rising costs, there are increasing calls for the government to take swift action to improve the economic situation and provide much-needed support.
