Rivers PDP power tussle, nat’l officers of the party back Gov. Fubara to conduct LGA election.

The political landscape in Rivers State is increasingly tense ahead of the local government elections scheduled for October 5, 2024. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed strong support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara, urging residents to participate in the elections despite previous calls from the party’s state chapter, led by former Governor Nyesom Wike, to boycott the polls.

The rift between Wike and Fubara has centered on control of the political structure in the state, complicating the party’s position. In a statement, PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba emphasized the importance of exercising the constitutional right to vote and condemned alleged actions by the “APC-controlled” police aimed at disrupting the elections.

The PDP called on the international community to hold the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Inspector General of Police accountable for any potential unrest, stressing the need for a secure environment for the elections. The statement reaffirmed the party’s commitment to upholding democratic processes in Rivers State.
