During the celebration of World Teachers’ Day, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Oyo State honored the incumbent governor, Engr. Oluwaseyi Makinde, by naming their sports complex after him. This decision reflects the governor’s significant contributions to the education sector in Oyo State.

The announcement was made by the NUT State Chairman, Comrade Alhaji Raji Oladimeji Ismail, at the NUT Endwell Model College Sports Complex in Ibadan. He praised Governor Makinde as a “teacher-friendly and education-oriented” leader, highlighting key achievements such as timely salary payments, the introduction of a ₦25,000 palliative for teachers, and the ongoing recruitment of new teachers.

In his address, the NUT Chairman stated, “After thorough consideration, we unanimously decided to name the sports complex after His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde.” He acknowledged the governor’s commitment to education and thanked him for his support.

Governor Makinde attended the event to express gratitude to teachers for their role in his electoral success. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to enhancing education in the state and pledged to continue collaborating with the NUT.

The event also featured various dignitaries, including the Oyo State Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, and the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Salihu Abdulwaheed Adelabu. The NUT’s national president, Comrade Audu Titus Amba, emphasized the importance of recognizing teachers’ contributions to society.

Keynote speaker Barr. Olu Abiaka addressed the theme “Valuing Teachers’ Voices Towards a New Social Contract for Education,” underscoring the need for teachers’ voices to be heard in educational policy discussions.

The celebration concluded with awards presented to prominent figures who have positively impacted education in Oyo State, reaffirming the collective commitment to the advancement of the teaching profession.
