The Edo State House of Assembly has rejected outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki’s request for a supplementary budget, marking the fourth such proposal since January 2024. The decision was made just two weeks before Obaseki’s departure, after he sought funding to aid incoming Governor Monday Okpebholo in transitioning to governance.
The Centre for Good Governance and Public Safety criticized the ongoing supplementary budgets as fraudulent, alleging collusion between the legislature and the executive. They urged Obaseki to safeguard public properties amidst reports of widespread looting by officials during this transition period.
Recent incidents include the removal of solar street lights and a new generator from government premises, raising concerns about governance integrity. The Centre called for law enforcement to investigate these actions, highlighting a troubling pattern of theft under Obaseki’s watch. They urged public cooperation to report looters and stressed that government resources should be protected.
