In a recent ruling by an Ogun Special Anti-Cultism Court in Abeokuta, 27-year-old Afeeze Ishola was sentenced to seven years in prison for membership in a secret cult. The sentence followed a conviction on a one-count charge of being part of an unlawful society. Magistrate J.A. Akan confirmed that the prosecution had proven the case beyond reasonable doubt, with the evidence deemed credible.

The prosecution, led by Insp. Olaide Rawlings, presented that Ishola was arrested on September 2, 2022, around 4:30 am at Opara 11 Estate Rounder in Abeokuta. Ishola was caught roaming the area by a security guard and confessed to being a member of the Eiye Confraternity Cult. He claimed he was trying to escape a rival cult group intending to kill him. Ishola’s arrest followed a brief confrontation, and he was later handed over to the police. The court found his actions in violation of the state’s laws on cultism and related offenses.
