A group of opposition lawmakers has accused certain governors within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), along with the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and state chairmen, of conspiring to keep the acting national chairman, Umar Damagum, in power until 2027. The lawmakers allege this strategy is aimed at weakening the party and facilitating endorsements for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
Spokesperson for the group, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, made these claims during a press conference in Akokwa, Imo State, on Sunday. He criticized the PDP leadership for its complacency in the face of national challenges, accusing them of turning the party into an “errand platform” for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Ugochinyere also alleged that PDP leaders were secretly meeting with APC officials in London, further undermining the opposition’s position.
The lawmakers accused the PDP national chairman and secretary of frequenting the residence of Nyesom Wike, a prominent member of the APC, and alleged that the ongoing delays in holding a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting were part of a plan to prolong Damagum’s tenure. They argued that this situation would ultimately result in the selection of a weak presidential candidate for the party in 2027.
