Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has acknowledged that President Bola Tinubu has the authority to push through the controversial tax reform bill, even as it faces strong opposition from various groups, particularly in Northern Nigeria. In an interview with Channels Television, Zulum, while respecting the president’s power, warned of the potential negative consequences the bill might have on the people, noting that fewer than three governors across the country support the bill. Zulum has previously argued that the bill could lead to economic setbacks for the North and Nigeria as a whole.
Despite this resistance, the bill has passed its second reading in the Senate, though it has sparked significant debate. The Northern Governors Forum, Northern Elders Forum, and other key figures like Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume have called for its withdrawal, citing concerns over its alignment with the region’s interests. Meanwhile, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin defended the bill’s progression, stating that the Senate passed it to facilitate a broader discussion with experts and the public.
