In an exclusive interview, Kanunta Kanu, the brother of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, stated that his brother would not alter his stance on the marginalization of the South-East region even if released from detention. He emphasized that Nnamdi Kanu’s demands from the Nigerian government were not about Biafra independence, but rather about infrastructural development, such as roads, hospitals, and employment creation in the South-East. Kanunta also expressed that Kanu was resolute in his mission to improve the region, regardless of his detention, and criticized the government for its refusal to dialogue with him.
Kanunta warned the Nigerian government against using Kanu’s release for political gain in the 2027 elections, pointing to the lack of progress in the region despite his brother’s repeated calls for reforms. He further accused Southeast politicians of benefiting from the ongoing insecurity and the detention of Kanu, suggesting they were more focused on their own political ambitions than addressing the needs of their people.
Regarding Simon Ekpa, a self-proclaimed leader of the Biafra Government in Exile, Kanunta dismissed him as a “content creator” rather than a legitimate freedom fighter and denied any connection between Ekpa’s actions and Kanu’s leadership. He also criticized the Nigerian government’s handling of insecurity in the South-East, suggesting that security agencies were complicit in the violence for their own gain.
Kanunta also touched on the broader political situation in Nigeria, claiming that the country’s leadership, dominated by the Yoruba ethnic group, was not addressing the root causes of the nation’s problems. He argued that Nnamdi Kanu’s release should not be used for political purposes, stressing that his brother’s only demand was for the welfare of the people, not political office.
