The Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, George Ibezimako Ozodinobi, has strongly criticized four of his colleagues for defecting from the Labour Party (LP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The defectors—Chinedu Okere, Mathew Donatus, Akiba Bassey, and Esosa Iyawe—cited internal conflicts within the LP as their reason for switching parties.
Ozodinobi, expressing his disappointment on the floor of the House, quoted the Bible, comparing the defectors to the women of Israel weeping for Jesus, but he warned them that they would continue to weep for their future in the APC. He indicated that the APC offered no future for them, implying that their political shift was misguided.
In response to the defections, the Labour Party condemned the actions, calling them irrational and inconsistent with democratic principles. The party’s spokesman, Obiora Ifoh, stressed that the LP would not let the defections go unchecked and announced that the party’s legal team would pursue legal action to recover their mandates, in accordance with the 1999 constitution and the 2022 Electoral Act.
