The Arewa Youths Integrity Network (AYIN), a socio-political group from northern Nigeria, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of showing favoritism towards the Yoruba ethnic group, while neglecting other regions of the country.
The group specifically condemned the recent appointment of Mr. Shamseldeen Babatunde Ogunjimi as Acting Accountant General of the Federation (AGoF).
In a statement, AYIN expressed disappointment that the president chose his fellow Yoruba man for this crucial position, especially as there are already several other Yoruba individuals holding significant roles in government.
President Tinubu, through his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, had announced Ogunjimi’s appointment on Tuesday, a role he will hold until Dr. Oluwatoyin Sakirat Madein retires in March 2025.
This appointment comes just months before Madein’s scheduled retirement and pre-retirement leave.
In a statement on Friday, AYIN’s spokesperson, Barr. James Ismaila, emphasized that the group sees this appointment as an insult to the northern region, highlighting that qualified individuals from the North also deserve such high-ranking positions.
The group further criticized the decision, stating, “Appointing another Yoruba man nearing retirement to replace an outgoing Yoruba woman in such an important role is a serious disservice to the North. We oppose this strongly and will not tolerate it.”
Reflecting on their previous support for Tinubu during the 2023 elections, AYIN expressed that they set aside regional preferences, believing in national unity and fairness.
They called on the president to ensure that appointments are made based on merit and to avoid favoritism, stating that Nigeria belongs to all its ethnic groups and the president should serve all citizens, not just his ethnic group.
