The Anambra State Government has issued directives following a tragic stampede during a rice-sharing event in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area, which resulted in several deaths. Governor Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo expressed deep sorrow over the incident, extending condolences to the affected families, particularly those of vulnerable groups such as women, children, and the elderly. The state government has called for a more structured and safer approach to distributing aid in the future, emphasizing crowd control and safety measures.
Governor Soludo directed that all food distribution events prioritize the safety and well-being of beneficiaries. He acknowledged the Obi Jackson Foundation, which organized the event, and noted that the tragedy highlighted the need for organized and decentralized distribution methods to avoid overcrowding. Future events should implement measures such as multiple distribution points, prioritization of vulnerable groups, trained personnel for crowd management, and public awareness campaigns to ensure safety. A thorough investigation into the cause of the stampede has been initiated, with the government working with relevant agencies to address any negligence or lapses in safety protocols.
