Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has expressed concerns over a directive from the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, which restricts the distribution of palliatives to the less privileged. The IGP issued the directive in response to recent stampedes in Oyo, Anambra, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), warning against unauthorized distribution and requiring security involvement in such efforts.
While acknowledging the IGP’s intention to prevent tragedies and ensure public safety, Obi believes that the directive may discourage citizens from helping those in need. He emphasized that acts of kindness should not be hindered by bureaucracy, especially in a time of widespread hunger, pain, and anger. Obi called for more organized ways to offer help, rather than imposing restrictions that could stifle compassion.
He urged the IGP to review the directive, advocating for collaboration and support rather than creating obstacles for those trying to alleviate suffering. Additionally, Obi stressed the need for the government to address the root causes of hardship, offering lasting solutions instead of creating barriers for citizens’ efforts.
