President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a significant allocation of N95 billion for the rehabilitation of over 16 dams in Kano State, as well as the construction of the Eastern Bypass Road. This decision aims to enhance irrigation farming and improve agricultural productivity in the region, aligning with the federal government’s agricultural priorities.
Musa Illiyasu Kwankwaso, the newly appointed Executive Director of Finance at the Hadejia River Basin Development Authority, confirmed that a technical committee has already been set up to evaluate the dams, including major ones like Challawa Gorge and Tiga Dams. The rehabilitation is expected to boost irrigation, which will positively impact agriculture in Kano.
The N95 billion appropriation was secured by Senator Kawu Sumaila and is part of the broader development efforts for the state, which also include the Eastern Bypass Road designed to connect the southern region to the city. This infrastructure project is seen as crucial for improving transportation links and stimulating economic activities.
The initiative is further supported by the North West Development Commission, championed by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, which reflects the administration’s dedication to the prosperity of Kano and the North West region as a whole.
Kwankwaso expressed gratitude for the support of key political figures, including APC leaders and others, and emphasized the competence of the team overseeing these projects, underscoring the administration’s commitment to completing critical infrastructure like the Kano to Kaduna and Abuja expressway and the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) pipeline by 2025. This reflects the broader vision of the Tinubu administration to strengthen Kano and the North’s economic and infrastructural development.
