The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has expressed serious concern over the increasing cases of Lassa fever in the country, particularly as it coincides with the peak season for the disease. The NCDC’s Director-General, Jide Idris, revealed that there have been 1,154 confirmed Lassa fever cases and 190 deaths, marking a case fatality rate of over 13%. In total, 9,492 suspected cases have been reported across Nigeria, with six states—Ondo, Edo, Bauchi, Taraba, Benue, and Ebonyi—accounting for 89% of the confirmed infections.

In response to the growing threat, the NCDC has ramped up efforts, including activating Emergency Operations at Response Level 2 to improve coordination and management of the outbreak. Key actions have included the distribution of medical supplies, increased diagnostics with additional testing laboratories, and intensified rodent control measures in hotspot areas. The NCDC has also stressed the importance of early medical intervention, advising individuals who experience symptoms such as fever, headache, and body weakness to seek prompt healthcare. Public health messages and heightened surveillance are being implemented to mitigate the spread of the virus.

The NCDC continues to collaborate with state governments, healthcare providers, and community leaders to curb the impact of Lassa fever, urging citizens to adopt preventive measures and report suspected cases to health authorities.
