The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has summoned the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of domestic airlines to a meeting over the ongoing flight delays and cancellations that have been particularly problematic during the festive season. NCAA Director-General Chris Najomo will meet with the airline leaders on Friday, cutting short an important assignment to address the issue.
This decision comes after incidents where passengers became agitated due to long delays. NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs, Michael Achimugu, shared an experience where he intervened when passengers threatened violence over flight disruptions. Achimugu personally engaged with the passengers, clarified issues related to weather conditions, and ensured airlines provided compensation and transportation. He also took steps to ensure passengers had their concerns addressed, including paying for accommodation for elderly passengers.
Additionally, Achimugu mentioned that the NCAA is taking action against five airlines for their failure to meet standards, marking the first such enforcement in over a decade. He has also requested daily weather reports from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) to verify claims of weather-related delays and ensure transparency.
