Inside Mark Zuckerberg’s Alleged Hawaiian Shelter Project

Newsie Events:

Last December, a detailed investigation by Wired revealed that Meta CEO and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was reportedly constructing a sprawling 1,400-acre estate on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. Among its notable features is an underground shelter spanning over 5,000 square feet—more than double the size of the average American family home.

In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Zuckerberg addressed speculation about the nature of this underground space. When asked if it was a “doomsday bunker,” he downplayed the idea, stating, “No, I think that’s just like a little shelter. It’s like a basement.”

According to Wired, the entire Hawaiian compound is estimated to cost around $270 million to complete.

The underground shelter, however, stands out as the centerpiece, reportedly featuring a blast-resistant metal and concrete door, an escape hatch accessible by ladder, and its own dedicated energy and food supplies.

The investigation also highlighted the extreme secrecy surrounding the project.

Almost every individual involved—from painters to security guards—was required to sign strict nondisclosure agreements.

To further maintain confidentiality, different construction crews were hired for separate aspects of the project, and workers were explicitly forbidden from communicating with one another.

Despite the tight secrecy, anonymous sources speculated that Zuckerberg might be constructing “some sort of postapocalyptic bunker” or perhaps even “a vast underground city.”

Zuckerberg isn’t alone in being linked to such projects. Wealthy individuals like Microsoft’s Bill Gates and Tesla’s Elon Musk have also been rumored to own underground facilities designed to withstand catastrophic events.

Meta has not responded to Fortune’s request for comment regarding the project.
