Recently Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Badagry, Lagos State, successfully intercepted six suspected smugglers and seized 126 bags of foreign parboiled rice at Akere Creek. The operation followed an intelligence report about ongoing smuggling activities in the area. The suspects were caught using three fibre boats, which were also confiscated during the operation.
The FOB swiftly deployed a response team to the location, leading to the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of the rice. Despite conducting additional searches in nearby areas, no further contraband or individuals were discovered.
The seized goods and suspects were handed over to the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) at the Seme Command for further investigation and legal action. The FOB commander, Linus Osuman, emphasized the crucial role of addressing smuggling, which undermines Nigeria’s economy by reducing government revenue and negatively impacting local industries. He reassured the public of the Navy’s continued commitment to safeguarding the country’s waterways in collaboration with other agencies to combat illegal activities.
