The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State has defended the suspension of 18 local government chairmen and their deputies by the State House of Assembly, stating that it was necessary to maintain order and stability in the state. The party’s Acting State Chairman, Emperor Jarret Tenebe, expressed full support for the actions taken by the House of Assembly in a statement on Friday.

Tenebe responded to claims made by the PDP’s caretaker committee, led by Anthony Aziegbemi, who accused the state government of lawlessness and undermining constitutional democracy. Tenebe dismissed these allegations as unfounded and libellous, asserting that the actions were in the best interest of the citizens and aligned with the law. He also backed the councillors who voted to impeach the suspended chairmen and urged anti-graft agencies to investigate alleged misappropriation of funds by the suspended officials.

Furthermore, Tenebe criticized the PDP for attempting to discredit the government of Governor Okpebholo, arguing that the people of Edo State were not swayed by the opposition’s accusations. He referred to the PDP as a “dying party” and recalled the alleged mismanagement under their governance, including the failure to swear in members of the House of Assembly for years and the abuse of people’s rights.

Tenebe emphasized that while opposition parties are entitled to criticize the government, they should do so constructively and without distorting facts. He called for collaboration between civil society organizations and the state government to address grievances and uphold democracy. He reaffirmed that Governor Okpebholo had a clear mandate, and no amount of opposition or blackmail would deter him from his responsibilities.
