Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya has announced that his administration has cleared ₦17.2 billion of the ₦21 billion gratuity debt inherited from previous governments since he took office in 2019.

Speaking at a cheque presentation event for retirees on Monday, Yahaya emphasized his commitment to fully settle the remaining gratuity obligations, which currently stand at ₦19 billion for both state and local government retirees, before the end of his tenure in 2027.

He acknowledged the continuous growth of these liabilities as more civil servants retire and assured that his administration would not leave any retiree without their rightful benefits.

Yahaya also highlighted the implementation of a ₦70,000 minimum wage for state workers, underlining his administration’s broader efforts to improve the welfare of civil servants. He expressed gratitude towards labor unions and retiree associations for their collaboration in addressing the state’s financial responsibilities.

The governor reiterated that clearing the gratuity debt was part of his goal to leave a legacy of accountability and compassion.
