The Sokoto State Government has expressed its condolences and pledged immediate assistance to those affected by the devastating fire that recently struck the Kara Market. The blaze severely damaged over 50 shops and 132 grinding machines in the ‘Karar-‘Yan-Nika’ area of the market, which is a crucial hub for grains and other goods in the region.

On Saturday morning, the fire ravaged the market, causing substantial property damage worth millions of naira. The government’s response was led by Deputy Governor Alhaji Idris Gobir, who visited the scene to sympathize with the victims and reassure them of the administration’s support.

In his remarks, Gobir expressed the government’s commitment to helping the victims, emphasizing that measures would be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. He also announced the establishment of a committee to assess the damage and propose fire prevention strategies.

Gobir highlighted the role of public awareness in mitigating fire risks, particularly during the harmattan season, which is characterized by dry and windy conditions that increase the likelihood of fire outbreaks. Many traders, both indigenous and non-indigenous, who depend on the market for their livelihoods, have been severely impacted by the disaster.
