The North-Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum has raised concerns about an alleged alliance between Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), and former Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State. The Forum has asked President Bola Tinubu to monitor Akume’s activities, suggesting that the SGF is working with opposition figures to destabilize the APC in the North-Central zone, particularly in Benue.
This alliance became evident during a thanksgiving event in Benue, where Ortom, who switched from APC to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) during his tenure, attended alongside Akume. The Forum is alarmed by this collaboration, considering Ortom’s opposition to the current APC-led government under Governor Hyacinth Alia, who succeeded Ortom.
The Forum expressed its dissatisfaction with Akume’s role, emphasizing that his alliance with Ortom, a figure under investigation by Alia’s administration, could harm the APC’s prospects in the region. The statement also criticized Akume for allegedly prioritizing personal loyalty and power over the development of Benue State, which they argue Ortom’s administration neglected during its tenure.
The North-Central APC Forum fears that this unification between Akume and Ortom could undermine the APC’s efforts to maintain control in Benue and the North-Central region, especially in light of Ortom’s recent remarks about reclaiming power in 2027. The Forum is urging President Tinubu and the national leadership of the APC to act swiftly to prevent further destabilization of the party’s position in the region.
