Alaafin stool is not for sale -Gov. Makinde.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has emphasized that the stool of the Alaafin of Oyo is not for sale, and he made this clear to individuals who sought to influence the process by bringing in candidates linked to the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a statement made on Monday, Makinde revealed that some APC members attempted to introduce their preferred candidates for the Alaafin position, but he remained firm in his stance against such political interference.

Makinde explained that he met the new Alaafin, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, for the first time on January 11, noting that he had never previously interacted with Owoade or any of the other princes vying for the throne. This, according to him, was a deliberate decision to avoid any bias in the selection process.

This development follows the controversial rejection by the Oyomesi (the kingmakers) of Owoade’s appointment on January 10. The Oyomesi, in their disagreement, argued that the appointment should follow the traditional 1967 Chieftaincy Declaration, not the method used by the governor, which included consultation and divination.

Makinde further shared his past experience when dealing with traditional matters in Oyo State, mentioning how he had resolved issues with the traditional institution in Ibadanland. He also referenced his approach in selecting the Okere (traditional ruler) of Saki, explaining that despite political affiliations, his decisions were based on merit rather than party lines.
