In the recent local government elections held in Ondo State, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) emerged victorious, securing 16 out of the 18 chairmanship seats. This result was announced by the Chairman of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC), Joseph Aeemo, on Sunday at the commission’s headquarters in Akure.

The election, held on January 18, 2025, saw participation from 12 political parties, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) opting to withdraw due to concerns over the credibility of the electoral process. While elections were rescheduled in Ondo West Local Government Area (LGA), results were still being awaited from Owo LGA at the time of the declaration.

The local government elections had been long delayed, with the last council election taking place in August 2020, and the tenure of elected officials expiring in August 2023. Since then, the management of the councils had been overseen by civil servants. The election was finally conducted after multiple postponements.
