The Kano State Censorship Board has taken a firm stance against popular Kannywood artist Usman Sojaboy, alongside actresses Shamsiyya Muhammad and Hasina Suzan, by imposing a ban on their participation in Kannywood activities within the state. This action follows the release of a video that the board deems to promote behavior that clashes with the cultural and religious norms of Kano. The video sparked considerable backlash from both the public and religious scholars.
According to a statement issued by Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, the board’s Information Officer, Sojaboy had been warned multiple times about including “inappropriate and offensive content” in his work. Abba El-Mustapha, the Executive Secretary of the board, has instructed the board’s preview unit to ensure strict enforcement of the ban. Additionally, entertainment venues and theaters in Kano are directed to comply with this directive, ensuring that the banned individuals are not featured in any Kannywood productions. The board has made it clear that it will not tolerate indecency in the entertainment industry, and Sojaboy, along with the two actresses, is no longer recognized as part of the Kannywood community.
