Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe secure freedom pardon 30 inmates from five correctional centers. It’s interesting that the release involved both the payment of fines for some inmates and clemency for others, and that it came after an assessment by the state’s Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.
This decision reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to improve inmate welfare and provide opportunities for rehabilitation, like skill acquisition programs. What do you think about the practice of granting pardons or clemency in cases like this? Do you think it helps with prison reform or rehabilitation?
