On Thursday, February 27, 2025, Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, announced his return to the position, stating, “I’ve resumed, and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly.”
Obasa’s impeachment occurred on January 13, 2025, while he was in the United States, following allegations of misappropriation. In his absence, Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda was elected and sworn in as the new Speaker.
Upon his return, Obasa contested the legitimacy of his impeachment, arguing that it did not adhere to due process. He forcefully entered the Assembly complex accompanied by armed security operatives, reportedly taking over the office currently occupied by Speaker Meranda.
The situation has led to confusion within the Assembly, with reports indicating that the security details assigned to Speaker Meranda were withdrawn on Thursday morning.
Obasa maintains that he is still the legitimate Speaker, stating, “I’m the Speaker; I remain the Speaker of the Lagos Assembly.”
This development has intensified the ongoing leadership crisis within the Lagos State House of Assembly, raising questions about the legality of Obasa’s impeachment and the current power dynamics between him and Speaker Meranda.
