Federal High Court Reassigns Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial to New Judge

Newsie Events:

The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, has officially reassigned the trial of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu on terrorism-related charges to a new judge.

In a press release issued on Saturday, the head of Kanu’s legal team, Aloy Ejimakor, expressed appreciation to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) for her swift intervention and sound administrative judgment on the matter.

The statement, titled “Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s Case Finally Reassigned to Another Judge,” did not disclose the identity of the newly assigned judge.

The legal team highlighted the significant nature of the development, noting that the case reassignment followed the recusal of the previous judge who had been handling the trial since September 2024.

Kanu also extended his gratitude to the public for supporting the call for a lawful reassignment of his case, emphasizing his readiness to stand trial and his belief in his innocence.

The legal team pointed out that the delay caused by the judicial impasse over the past six months posed a threat to Kanu’s constitutional right to a fair and speedy trial, prompting them to seek administrative intervention.

The case, which has been before Justice Binta Nyako since 2015, faced multiple delays despite an interlocutory appeal reaching the Supreme Court.

Although the Supreme Court referred the matter back for retrial, no significant progress had been made due to repeated failed re-arraignment attempts since last year.
