Two unidentified bodies have been recovered after a gas explosion triggered a massive fire on Tuesday night at Otedola Bridge, Lagos.

The inferno left four others injured and caused extensive damage to four buildings and 15 vehicles.

According to Vanguard, the explosion involved a 30-tonne DAF gas truck. Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated at 10:30 p.m. that the accident likely occurred as the truck attempted to ascend the link road to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The vehicle reportedly somersaulted, spilling its contents and igniting the blaze instantly.

“The truck’s registration number and exact make remain unknown,” Hundeyin said. “The fire consumed four buildings, 15 vehicles—including tricycles—numerous shops, and household properties. The confirmed death toll stands at two, but rescue operations are ongoing.”

However, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) provided a slightly different account. Its South West Coordinator, Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed one fatality, four injuries, the destruction of 14 vehicles, four shops, and damage to a commercial storey building.

Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, revealed that the fire spread to a church, a nearby bungalow, and additional vehicles.

The incident caused panic among motorists, many of whom abandoned their vehicles or made frantic U-turns to escape the raging flames.

Authorities continue efforts to assess the full extent of the disaster.
