The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has urged Kenyan authorities to thoroughly investigate the death of Ladi Anzaki Olubunmi, a Nigerian content moderator who passed away in Nairobi.
According to LIB, Olubunmi, who worked for Teleperformance, a social media contracting firm, was found dead in her apartment on Friday, March 7, 2025.
Her body, already decomposing, was discovered three days later.
CNN journalist Larry Madowo reported that Olubunmi’s colleagues claimed she had repeatedly been denied leave.
Despite being entitled to an annual return ticket home, she had not visited Nigeria since arriving in Kenya.
Her coworkers said she had expressed exhaustion and a strong desire to return home but had been unable to do so for two years.
In response, Teleperformance Kenya denied these claims, calling them “baseless and untrue.”
However, some colleagues alleged that many Nigerian employees lack work permits, preventing them from traveling home.
Workers from other tech companies also highlighted issues such as low pay, inadequate mental health support, and long working hours as factors contributing to her death.
In a statement issued on Thursday, March 13, by NiDCOM’s Media and Public Relations representative, Gabriel Odu, Dabiri-Erewa emphasized the need for stronger labor laws to protect Nigerians working abroad.
She stressed that proper regulations would ensure better monitoring, documentation, and support for Nigerian employees overseas, helping to prevent similar tragedies.
Extending her condolences to Olubunmi’s family and colleagues, Dabiri-Erewa assured the public that NiDCOM is working with the Nigerian High Commission in Kenya to monitor the case and provide support to the deceased’s family.
She also urged Nigerians in Kenya to remain calm while the investigation continues.
Reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad, she advised job seekers to engage only with reputable organizations and stay informed about their rights and available support systems.
