The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed a tragic motor vehicle accident that occurred on Wednesday near Nyanya Bridge, resulting in multiple casualties and extensive damage.

In a statement issued on Wednesday night, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Josephine Adeh, reported that 14 vehicles were engulfed in flames following the crash. While eyewitnesses claimed that more than 10 people lost their lives, police officials confirmed that six victims were rescued from the wreckage but later succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.

According to the police, a distress call was received by the Karu Division on Wednesday evening regarding the accident. Investigations revealed that a Dangote trailer, heavily loaded with cement, lost control while approaching Nyanya Bridge from AYA, crashing into stationary vehicles caught in traffic. The impact triggered a massive fire, consuming 14 vehicles and causing widespread panic as motorists and pedestrians fled for safety.

Emergency responders, including the fire service, security agencies, and local volunteers, swiftly arrived at the scene to battle the raging inferno and rescue those trapped. Sadly, despite their efforts, six victims were confirmed dead at the hospital, and their remains have been deposited at Karu General Hospital Morgue.

Authorities have since managed to contain the fire and restore normal traffic flow. However, reports indicate that National Hospital and Asokoro Hospital are currently overwhelmed with victims receiving urgent medical care.

This tragic incident raises concerns about road safety and traffic management in the FCT, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of regulations to prevent similar occurrences.
