US Government Ends Legal Status for Over 500,000 Immigrants

Newsie Events:

The U.S. government is revoking the legal status of more than half a million immigrants, giving them just weeks to leave the country.

The decision affects approximately 532,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans who arrived under a program introduced by President Joe Biden in October 2022 and later expanded in January 2023.

According to the order, these individuals will lose their legal protection 30 days after the Department of Homeland Security publishes it in the Federal Register, which is set for Tuesday.

This means they must leave the U.S. by April 24 unless they secure a different immigration status.

Welcome.US, an organization supporting refugees, has urged those affected to seek legal advice immediately.

The program initially allowed up to 30,000 migrants per month to enter the U.S. for two years, providing a legal pathway for those fleeing human rights abuses.

President Biden promoted it as a “safe and humane” way to manage border crossings, but Homeland Security emphasized that the scheme was always temporary.

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has vowed to launch the largest deportation campaign in U.S. history, focusing on reducing immigration from Latin America.

Last week, he used wartime legislation to deport over 200 suspected Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador, which has agreed to imprison migrants and even U.S. citizens at a reduced cost.
