Ex-Immigration Official Applauds Anti-Corruption Efforts, Calls for Support for CGI

Newsie Events:

A retired Deputy Comptroller of Immigration and former Special Assistant to ex-Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Mr. Ime Nta, has raised concerns over deep-rooted corruption in the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

However, he commended the current Comptroller General of Immigration (CGI), K.N. Nandap, for taking decisive action to tackle the issue.

Nta, who actively fought corruption in the NIS before retiring over four years ago, described the problem as widespread and requiring firm measures to address it.

He praised Nandap’s bold approach, particularly her focus on digitalization to curb malpractice.
Recently, the CGI launched the third Nationwide Sensitization and Awareness Campaign Against Corruption 2025, themed “Increased Digitalization and Consolidated Innovations for Efficient and Transparent Services.”

At the event, she reiterated her commitment to leveraging technology-driven solutions, such as the Contactless Passport Application System and the upcoming e-Visa platform, to enhance efficiency and transparency while minimizing corruption.

Nta expressed optimism about these reforms, urging authorities to support and protect the CGI in her efforts.

Reflecting on his own struggles against corruption within the agency, he emphasized that this is the first time a Comptroller General has taken a direct, technology-based approach to tackling internal misconduct.

He called for strong political will and commitment to addressing systemic issues in passport administration and other critical areas, stressing that sustained support and possibly an extension of Nandap’s tenure would help solidify her progress in reforming the NIS.
