Rivers Political Turmoil: Ehie Alleges N5 Billion Bribe Attempt, Denies Arson Claims

Newsie Events:

Edison Ehie, Chief of Staff to suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has alleged that he was offered a N5 billion bribe to orchestrate his principal’s impeachment.

Speaking on Sunday Politics on Channels Television, Ehie, a former factional speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, claimed to have evidence of the offer on his phone.

“I can open my phone and show
you the messages from October 2023 when they approached me with a N5 billion bribe. I have printed and distributed the evidence in case of any threats against me,” he stated.

Ehie said the bribe offer came while he was the majority leader of the assembly. He also refuted claims that he orchestrated the October 30, 2023, bombing of the state assembly complex on Fubara’s orders.

The allegation was made by George Nwaeke, a former head of service in Rivers, who claimed he witnessed Ehie receiving a bag of money for the attack.

Dismissing the accusation as politically motivated, Ehie said, “I had no hand in the burning of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Like everyone else, I woke up that morning to hear the news.” He added that he has instructed his lawyers to file a criminal libel case against Nwaeke.

Ehie also alleged that Nwaeke sought financial assistance from him on the same day he resigned as head of service. Rivers State has been in political turmoil since Fubara’s fallout with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The crisis escalated when President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency on March 18, suspending the governor and his deputy.

On March 26, the state’s sole administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas, suspended all political officeholders.
