Amidst rumours that INEC will suspend the Edo gubernatorial election if violence erupts, the electoral commission has assured Nigerians that the governorship election will go ahead as planned.
Festus Okoye, INEC’s national commissioner for information and chairman of voter education, made the disclosure on Wednesday, August 12 on Channels TV.
He said the commission has shelved the idea of suspending the Edo governorship election because political parties have backtracked on their threats of violence ahead with the poll.
You would recall that Obaseki gave the assurance that they will tread in the path of peace despite any provocation being thrown at them, when he visited the Egiegbai II of Ekperi Kingdom, Alhaji Deke Kanoba, in Etsako central local government area of the state in continuation of his ward-to-ward campaign ahead of the September 19 gubernatorial election.
The INEC official said that the commission has observed that political parties toned down from the threats of violence ahead of the poll. So he said the election must hold.
