Former Ghanaian President, Jerry Rawlings, has died according to reports the Ghanaian media report. He died at the age of 73.
He is suspected to have died of COVID-19 complications at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana, on Thursday morning
Rawlings led Ghana as military and, later as civilian President between 1982 to 2001
In 1979, following a coup détat, Rawlings rose to power as a flight lieutenant in the Ghana Air Force.
In December 1981, after initially handing over to a civilian government, Rawlings took over power again as head of state.
JJ Rawlings resigned from the military in 1992 and became Ghana’s Fourth Republic President and was re-elected in 1996 for four more years.
Rawlings left office in 2000 after exhausting Ghana’s constitutional term-limit of eight years for Presidents.
