The Speaker, Niger State House of Assembly, Hon. Muhammad Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, has disclosed that legislators passed a motion recently, urging the executive to take a proactive measure towards tackling flood in the state following a warning from the Nigerian Metrological Agencies (NiMET) of possible heavy rainfall this year.
Sarkindaji, who represented the state Governor, Muhammad Umar Bago, stated this during a sympathy visit to the victims of a heavy downpour at Rafin-Gora community in Kontagora Local Government Area.
He explained that NIMET’s prediction stated that severe floods would follow the rainfall in the state, hence the need for proactive steps by the government.
Making a donation of N3 million to victims, the Bago appealed to the people to desist from building houses on waterways to avoid flooding.
Expressing shock at the destruction caused by the rainstorm and loss of lives and properties, the governor said, “no amount of money can bring back those lives that were lost. I, therefore, urge the people to accept the unfortunate incident as the will of God”.
Speaking, the District Head of Rafin Gora, Alh. Usman Mohammed, appreciated the governor for his visit and kind gesture to the community while assuring that the money would reach the targeted beneficiaries and would be judiciously utilized.
Recall heavy rainstorms with a heavy downpour took place through Rafin Gora community and surrounding villages on Wednesday night, in which over 100 households and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed.
