The Ogun State Government has shut down the Panseke market in Abeokuta due to environmental violations. Farook Akintunde, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Environment, stated that the closure followed repeated warnings to traders who ignored regulations. The market’s misuse of drainages has contributed to flooding and traffic disruptions.
Traders have reported that they were asked to pay a N2.5 million fine for the market’s reopening, but Akintunde clarified that no such fine has been imposed. He emphasized that the market would be reopened once traders comply with environmental laws. Additionally, he denied claims that the authorities had seized goods, noting that enforcement actions are routine and fines typically do not exceed N500,000.
