The Federal High Court in Lagos is set to rule on November 1, 2024, regarding the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) application for the final forfeiture of $2.045 million, along with properties and shares linked to former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele. This follows a previous interim forfeiture order issued on August 15, 2024.

During the latest hearing, the EFCC’s counsel argued for the final forfeiture, stating that Emefiele had not contested the funds. Emefiele’s lawyer countered, claiming that his client demonstrated a valid case against the forfeiture. The court previously rejected Emefiele’s request to stay proceedings while his appeal regarding the temporary forfeiture is pending, asserting that such appeals must be based on a trial court’s decision.

The case has highlighted tensions between Emefiele’s legal strategies and the EFCC’s pursuit of the assets, with significant implications for both parties depending on the court’s final ruling.
