Protesters from Kapam community in Chikun LGA, Kaduna State, have blocked the entrance to the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC), demanding compensation for damages caused by a toxic chemical spill.
The spill has reportedly destroyed farms, killed animals, and posed health risks to the community. Protesters, predominantly women, carried placards denouncing the refinery’s actions and highlighting the impact on their health and livelihoods.
One protester described severe health issues among children exposed to the chemicals, calling for justice and compensation. Other protesters expressed concerns over contaminated food, lack of medical care, and financial losses estimated in millions of naira.
They also criticized KRPC for neglecting the community’s needs, such as schools and healthcare facilities. As of now, KRPC has not responded to the protesters’ demands or issued a public statement.
